-During Minister Rodrigues' visit

August 17, 2020 - Georgetown, Guyana: Residents of Lust-en-Rust and surrounding areas in Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara are expected to receive an improved level of water service and quality by the end of this week.

This assurance given during a visit to the community by Minister within the Ministry of Communities, Hon. Susan Rodrigues and a team of GWI officials on Monday, August 17.

The Minister indicated that she was prompted to visit the community after being made aware of the water woes the community was facing. During the visit, residents explained that due to the low pressure of water they have been receiving, they are forced to pump water from a nearby canal.

In response, Minister Rodrigues assured residents that works are underway to restore the water service to an acceptable level. She noted that although GWI is putting arrangements in place to alleviate their water troubles by diverting water from other well stations, the area is in need of a new well.

Without a national budget however, Government is unable to allocate monies for the drilling of a new well. Nevertheless, she noted that once the budget has been passed, plans will be put in place for a permanent solution.

Executive Director of Operations, Mr. Dwayne Shako said a decision was made to rehabilitate the Westminster Number 2 well station so as to better serve the area. He highlighted that Lust-en-Rust, Schoonord and Recht-Door-Zee are consuming 2.1 million gallons of water but upon completion of the rehab works, they would receive approximately 2.8 million gallons of water. This would result in them receiving water at a standpipe level.

Minister Rodrigues observed that the entire scheme of Parfaite Harmonie needs attention since there are many unoccupied lots, high vegetation and deplorable streets. She said her ministry will go back to the drawing board and ensure there is better collaboration among the sister agencies involved in community development and infrastructure.
