Improving Competences in the area of Sanitation continues to be a major focus for the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), which manages the Georgetown Sewerage System. A Sewerage system is a network of pipes, pumps and force mains for the collection of wastewater or sewage from a community.

To this end, the company’s Head of Sanitation, Mr. Rensforde Joseph is currently in Japan on a 6 week training programme which will enable elevated levels of competencies in the area of sewerage system designs and treatment.

Organised by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the objective of the programme is to equip participants with the requisite skills to effectively design, operate and maintain sewerage and drainage systems.

This is to be achieved through intensive classroom and hands-on training, tours to treatment and government facilities, meetings with government officials and operators, workshops, seminars and tutorial sessions, among other activities.

The new abilities gained through this programme will result in greater efficiency at the company level, geared towards significantly improving the performance of the existing sewerage system and dealing with septic tanks. This will ultimately help to provide a better level of service for the customers served by these facilities.

Mr. Joseph is also expected to be better equipped to lead initiatives for the design of new and innovative wastewater treatment processing systems within Georgetown and other regions.

Greater collaboration with other agencies on matters relating to prevention of marine and other environmental degradation  will also be made possible.
