Regional Profiles

The Corporation’s operations are grouped in accordance with the country’s regional administrative structure. Each GWI regional operation location has zones in which its services are performed and the activities for the regions are executed in accordance with the five (5) functional areas; Organization and Management, Water Production and Quality, Water Distribution and Supply, Sanitation and Finance.

Region 2

In 2016, Region 2 had a population of 46,014 persons and its operational areas ranged from Pomeroon to Supenaam along the Essequibo Coast with 12,081 households and 10,489 customers. Region 4 East Bank Demerara

Region 4 – East Bank Demerara had a population of 58,294 persons and its operational areas ranged from Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara to Timehri and the Linden Highway up to Silver Hill with 17,574 households and 19,631 customers servicing 2,442, 1,669, and 2,987 customers respectively with service to twenty-one (21) communities. Region 5 – West Coast Berbice had a population of 49,174 persons and its operational areas ranged from Wilhelmina, Mahaica on the East Coast of Demerara to Gelderland on the West Bank of the Berbice with 13,711 households and 13,520 customers and 141 communities. Region 7 (Bartica)

In 2016, GWI provided service primarily to Bartica in this region which had a population of 17,270 persons. Water is provided from surface sources primarily from the Mazaruni River via the WTP located in Central Bartica which had 4,571 households and 1,936 customers, 1,447 metered and 489 unmetered. Region 10

In 2016, Region 10 – Upper Demerara - Berbice had a population of 38,847 persons and its operational areas ranged from Reg. 3, 4 & 5 to the North, Reg. 6 to the east and Reg. 7 & 8 to the west with 10,557 households and 7,572 customers. Hinterland Regions (1,7, 8 & 9)

The Hinterland department is responsible for both the operations and project implementation of potable water systems within Regions 1, 8, 9 and villages in the upper Mazaruni of Region 7. The Regions are further divided into Hinterland communities and towns/small towns.
